Retail security in 2026: tackling shoplifting and staff abuse
Retail crime has moved from an operational nuisance to a boardroom issue. Shop theft recorded by police rose again in the year to September 2025, and retailers' own figures are far higher still, with the British Retail Consortium recording millions of incidents and retail theft costing the sector well over £2 billion a year. Just as seriously, the British Retail Consortium's crime survey (February 2026) recorded around 1,600 incidents of violence and abuse against shop workers every day. That is down by about a fifth on the previous year, but still the second-highest level on record.
What's changed
Two shifts define retail crime today. First, the rise of organised retail crime: coordinated groups targeting high-value, easy-to-resell goods such as alcohol, cosmetics, meat and baby formula. Second, a worrying increase in aggression towards staff, which turns a stock-loss problem into a duty-of-care one.
Protecting a store is no longer just about protecting stock. It is about protecting the people behind the till.
How retailers are responding
The most effective retail security blends visible deterrence with a professional, measured response:
- SIA-licensed retail officers who provide a visible presence, deter offenders, and are trained to de-escalate confrontation rather than inflame it.
- Rapid-deploy CCTV towers and POD alarms for car parks, service yards and retail parks, monitored through an NSI Gold accredited monitoring centre for real-time detection and evidence capture.
- Store-detective and loss-prevention support for organised and repeat offending.
- Staff confidence, because a trained officer on the floor makes employees feel safer and reduces the burden on them to intervene.
The professional difference
Retail is a high-contact, high-pressure environment, which is exactly why vetting and training matter so much. Officers represent your brand to every customer who walks in. Ours are BS 7858-vetted, SIA-licensed and employed on PAYE, and trained in conflict management and customer service, not just deterrence.
