BS 7858 vetting explained: how security screening protects you

BS 7858 security screening explained

Every time we say a Go Security officer is "BS 7858-vetted," we're making a specific promise, not using a marketing phrase. BS 7858 is the British Standard for screening people who work in secure environments, and it is one of the clearest signals that a security provider is doing things properly. Here's what it actually involves, and why it should matter to anyone buying security.

What is BS 7858?

BS 7858, Screening of individuals working in a secure environment: Code of practice, is currently in its 2019 edition (BS 7858:2019, still the current edition listed by BSI as of October 2026). It sets out how to screen individuals before they take up roles in secure environments. It was written for the security industry but is now widely regarded as the benchmark for employment vetting wherever people are placed in positions of trust, from officers on a client's premises to staff with access to sensitive IT systems or secure buildings.

The purpose is straightforward: to confirm that a person is who they say they are, is entitled to work, and has a verifiable, unbroken history, so that an employer, and its clients, can place genuine trust in them.

What a BS 7858 check involves

Proper screening goes well beyond a quick identity check. A thorough BS 7858 vetting typically covers:

  • Identity verification, confirming the person is genuinely who they claim to be.
  • Right-to-work confirmation, ensuring they are legally entitled to work in the UK.
  • A full five-year employment and activity history, with gaps investigated and accounted for rather than glossed over.
  • Employer references, verified directly with previous employers.
  • Address history over five years.
  • Financial checks, such as credit and sanctions screening where appropriate.
  • SIA licence verification for licensable roles.

The standard also expects screening to be completed within a defined timeframe and kept on file, with a documented, auditable trail for every decision.

A five-minute ID check tells you a name. A BS 7858 screening tells you whether you can trust the person standing at your gate.

Why it protects buyers, not just providers

When you let a security officer onto your site, you are extending them access to your people, your premises and often your most sensitive areas. Unvetted or poorly vetted staff are a direct risk: to safety, to security and to your reputation. Insisting on BS 7858 vetting is one of the simplest, most effective ways to manage that risk, and it gives you documented evidence of due diligence if anything is ever questioned. It is the difference between hoping the person on your gate is trustworthy and being able to prove it.

How Go Security applies it

Every officer we deploy is screened to BS 7858 before they ever set foot on a client site, with no exceptions, and that includes our K9 dog handlers. Our workforce of around 300 monthly is 100% PAYE, and we keep transparent, auditable records of vetting, licences, right-to-work checks, pay and hours. If a client or regulator wants to see the evidence, it's there.

The technology behind it: Instant Check

Vetting at this standard, at the pace the security industry moves, is genuinely hard. Chasing five years of references by hand, tracking documents and keeping everything audit-ready is exactly where many providers slip. We know, because we felt that pain ourselves, and it's why our team built Instant Check, our sister company and a purpose-built BS 7858 vetting platform.

Instant Check automates the heavy lifting of BS 7858:2019 screening, from candidate onboarding and document collection to automated reference chasing, identity verification and audit-ready reporting, all within a secure, 2FA-protected portal. Covering the full set of checks from identity and right-to-work to employment history, credit, sanctions and SIA licence verification, with built-in monitoring of screening deadlines, it means our vetting is not only rigorous but fast and consistently evidenced. It's the engine that lets us promise proper screening on every single officer, at scale.
