Solar CCTV towers explained: how AI-monitored units cut security costs
Mobile CCTV towers have quietly become one of the most cost-effective tools in site security. Solar-powered, rapidly deployed and increasingly driven by AI, they deliver round-the-clock surveillance to places that would be impractical or expensive to guard with officers alone. Here is how they work, and where they make the most sense.
What a solar CCTV tower is
A CCTV tower is a self-contained surveillance unit, typically on a tow-and-go trailer or mast, powered by solar panels and batteries so it needs no mains connection. Cameras, often including thermal and PTZ optics, feed back over 4G or 5G to a monitoring centre. It can be delivered and live on site within 24 to 48 hours, and moved as your needs change.
Where AI changes the game
The step-change in recent years is AI-assisted monitoring. Instead of operators watching hours of empty footage, on-board and centre-side AI filters out wind, wildlife and passing traffic, and flags genuine human intrusions for a human operator to verify and act on. That supports faster, more reliable response and can reduce false alarms.
A monitored tower does not just record what happened. It lets a trained operator intervene while it is still happening.
Why they cut costs
Round-the-clock manned guarding of a single site typically costs around £15,300 to £19,000 a month outside London (about 730 officer hours at £21 to £26 an hour). A monitored CCTV tower can cover the same open ground for a fraction of that, and one tower can watch an area that would take several officers to patrol. For wide or open sites, the maths is compelling, as we set out in manned guarding versus CCTV towers.
Where they excel
- Construction sites and development plots with open perimeters.
- Car parks, compounds and yards needing wide-area overwatch.
- Vacant land and void property where a presence is needed but staffing is impractical.
- Temporary projects and events that need fast, flexible coverage.
The GO CCTV range
Through our sister company GO CCTV, Go Security clients get the full range of solar-powered, AI-monitored towers and units, delivered, set up and monitored 24/7 through an NSI Gold accredited monitoring centre. See the full tower range on our CCTV page.
