No Guard Alone: protecting the people who protect everyone else
Security officers spend their working lives looking after other people, venues, assets and the public, often alone, often at night, often dealing with abuse and aggression. But who looks after them? That simple question sits at the heart of No Guard Alone, a campaign and charity dedicated to the mental health of security workers, and Go Security is a proud supporter.
What is No Guard Alone?
No Guard Alone is a first-of-its-kind initiative tackling male suicide and poor mental health in the security industry. It exists to break the long-standing "just get on with it" culture and to normalise open conversations about mental health among the people on the frontline. Its message is simple and powerful: no guard should ever have to carry the weight of their struggles alone, and no manager should feel powerless to help.
The campaign works to move the sector from silence to support, from stigma to systems, and from isolation to community, partnering with mental health specialists to build practical, real-world support rather than box-ticking exercises.
Why it matters in our industry
The numbers are sobering. Across the wider population, the picture is already serious; in a male-dominated, high-pressure industry like security, the risks are higher still:
- Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK.
- Every day in England and Wales, around 12 men die by suicide.
- Men are roughly three times more likely to die by suicide than women.
- There are over 350,000 SIA-licensed men under 50 working in UK security, many working alone, on nights, and facing aggression as part of the job.
- Too often, those struggling, and even the people around them, have no idea anything is wrong.
For too long, these tragedies have been treated as sad but inevitable. No Guard Alone refuses to accept that, and so do we.
For every officer carrying it silently. Proud to support No Guard Alone.
Why Go Security supports it
Looking after our officers isn't an add-on to how we run Go Security, it's central to it. Supporting No Guard Alone is a natural extension of that. We're proud to have donated to the cause and to help fund the vital work and research behind it, because a healthier, better-supported workforce is safer for our people, our clients and the public alike.
Supporting officer wellbeing also makes us a better security provider. People who feel seen, supported and able to speak up are more focused, more reliable and more likely to stay in the industry, and that consistency is exactly what our clients value.
How you can help
Whether you run a security business, work in the industry, or simply want to back a worthwhile cause, No Guard Alone welcomes support. The most important thing any of us can do, though, costs nothing: check in on the people around you, take "I'm fine" with a pinch of salt, and make it normal to talk.
